Summer, Altroconsumo notes a 21% increase in housing costs

Accommodation prices (and holidays in general) will also rise for summer 2024. This is certified by the usual Altroconsumo analysis to verify how much a week’s stay for two people in hotels and B&Bs in 6 tourist locations (Cervia, Gallipoli , Ortisei, Valdisotto, Florence and Naples). As regards the different types of structures, hotels are generally more expensive than B&Bs. In particular, in the mountains the price differences are notable, 24% more on average in Valdisotto and 55% more in Ortisei. At the seaside, however, the Altroconsumo survey reveals opposite trends, hotels are more expensive than B&Bs in Gallipoli (+15%) and cheaper in Cervia (-8%). In cities of art, prices are aligned between the two types of accommodation and with opposite trends in the two cities, hotels in Florence are cheaper (-5%) while in Naples they are more expensive (+5%) than B&Bs.

Furthermore, in hotels as well as in B&Bs the most convenient destinations on average are the cities of art with respectively 95 and 96 euros per night. However, the results for the highest prices are different: in the mountains the hotels are more expensive where a night can cost on average 165 euros, while in B&Bs the most expensive destination is at the seaside where you spend on average 137 euros per night. In art cities, prices at least for hotels are more stable, while B&B prices are rising by 23%.

In the mountains the average prices have increased compared to last year, in all the structures analyzed (+27%). The price increase is very significant in both hotels and B&Bs and the latter are the structures where prices have increased the most, narrowing the price difference compared to hotels to 38% (compared to 42% in 2023). Even at the seaside, prices are rising (a figure also confirmed by the recent Altroconsumo survey on beach prices), on average by +23%, but in this case it is hotel prices that are rising the most, recording an increase of 34%. By the sea, the price difference between hotels and B&Bs is not very marked, only 4% more on average for hotels.

In general, therefore, to spend the first week of August in one of the tourist locations analysed, two people will spend 1,014 euros. The cheapest destination among those analyzed is Cervia, where a week’s holiday costs 729 euros. To reach this location, the minimum travel cost is 41 euros from Bologna and the maximum is 231 euros from Bari. The most expensive destination of the sample is in the mountains: for a week in Ortisei at the beginning of August you can spend 1,377 euros . Starting from Bari for this destination, the travel costs are the highest, i.e. 380 euros. The two new destinations in this survey are also above one thousand euros: Gallipoli with a cost of 1,305 euros and Valdisotto with a cost of 1,044 euros. To stay under a thousand euros, in addition to Cervia, you can choose the cities of art: for a week in Florence the cost is 895 euros, while in Naples you spend even less, 736 euros.

The costs of travel to reach holiday destinations increase compared to 2023, but to a much lesser extent than accommodation: +1.05% for petrol and +1.59% for diesel (the reference is the survey of the Ministry of June 11th, considering that fuel prices are highly variable). Furthermore, on the routes for which the differences with 2023 can be assessed and with the same kilometers of motorway and very similar total distance to travel, the increases are very limited, on average just above 1%, while the increases in tolls they are on average 1.3%.
