Climate and pollution, effects on childhood
The report highlights that children under the age of five are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. These include premature birth, low birth weight, asthma and lung disease. In 2021, exposure to air pollution was associated with more than 700,000 deaths of children under five, becoming the second leading risk factor for global death for this age group, just after malnutrition.

Domestic air pollution and impacts in Africa and Asia
The impact of household air pollution resulting from cooking at home with polluting fuels is particularly significant, especially in Africa and Asia. In 2021, approximately 500,000 child deaths have been attributed to this cause. These data highlight the urgent need for global interventions to reduce air pollution and protect public health, especially of the most vulnerable populations.
