A 29-year-old boy from Otranto lost his life in the accident, Federico Baldi, who was driving his scooter. As the doctors found out, the boy’s condition immediately appeared serious and there was nothing that could be done due to the severity of the injuries sustained. Both the Carabinieri and the 118 health workers intervened at the site of the accident to investigate the case.

The dynamics are being ascertained by the investigators but it would seem probable, conditional obligation, that according to an initial reconstruction by the investigators, the impact was caused by a reversing maneuver by the vehicle in which some Roman tourists were traveling.

Provincial road 48 Martano-Otranto continues to be the scene of tragic accidents, adding new names to the victims’ bulletin. In the past few hours, yet another tragedy: a 29-year-old motorcyclist lost his life following a collision with a car. With a joint note, regional councilor Paolo Pagliaro and provincial councilor Giovanni Casarano declared:

A road of death that exposes those who travel it to constant danger, without safety interventions having been foreseen and programmed. But we can no longer stand by and watch.

Provincial road 48 is impassable, dotted with speed bumps that not only reduce visibility, but also compromise the stability of vehicles. We ask the Province of Lecce to address this need with the utmost urgency. We ask for immediate awareness and a definitive solution to avoid further accidents and loss of human life.

We also urge an intervention to map the levels of danger of provincial roads. The safety of citizens must come first. We therefore ask for a joint commitment from the Province and the Region for concrete and decisive solutions to make provincial road 48 safe, without further delay.
