A historical re-enactment with theatrical show and themed guided tours to celebrate the 450 years since the death of Cosimo I dei Medici and Giorgio Vasari.

Castiglione della Pescaia: The Common of Castiglione della Pescaia participated in the announcement from the Tuscany Region presenting an articulation project that tells of the strong bond between the Medici family and the Castiglione territory.

In 1559, after a period of devastation due to malaria and Turkish raids, the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia was purchased by Eleanor of Toledowife of Cosimo I dei Medici. Upon Eleonora’s death, which occurred from malaria in 1562 during a trip to the Maremma to see how the reclamation work undertaken was progressing, Cosimo inherited her possessions.

Under the Medici family, the people of Castiglione experienced a period of security and relaxation. Symbol of the happy Medici dominion is Centurions Palacea historic building within the village of Castiglione, where you can still breathe a Renaissance air, which Cosimo and Eleonora renovated, expanding it and transforming it into the Town Hall.

Received at Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati, Mayor Elena Nappi presented the celebration project to the President of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani.

«Having been chosen and financed by the Tuscany Region – declares the mayor Elena Nappi – as one of the best projects presented for the celebrations of the 450th anniversary of the death of Cosimo I de’ Medici, it makes us proud and honored to become part of the 2024 regional calendar and rewards the work carried out by the Tourism Office which built the project entirely on figure of Eleonora of Toledo, Cosimo’s first wife, exalting the great foresight that this particular female figure had on the future of our land, a perspicacity carried forward by the great statesman even after the death of his beloved wife”.

Palazzo Centurioni will be the setting for the show “Eleonora di Toledo, mother of Tuscany”, a historical re-enactment with actors and musicians supported by non-professional figures who will tell about Cosimo and Eleonora, one of the most important figures, through the streets of the historic village women of Tuscan Renaissance society, a woman of great charisma who on numerous occasions replaced her husband in the government of the territory, and the first-person owner of large estates.

At the same time, guided tours dedicated to Eleonora da Toledo and the historical places of her stay in Castiglione will be organised, starting from the ancient Lake Prile which has now been transformed into the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve.

An innovative project that the Municipality will implement in September, offering tourists and residents a further opportunity for cultural entertainment.

«This project too – concludes the first citizen – supports the deseasonalizing policy of our administration which for years has been trying to promote its territory beyond the pure seaside product with diversified and experiential tourism such as the cultural one which is one of the strong points of our history”.
