Oslo – Norwegian authorities have for the first time fined a shipowner and the captain of a ship for the possession of heavy fuel oil in the Svalbard region. The governor of the region reports that the ship was stopped in violation of the Svalbard Environment Act of 2022 which aims to prevent dangers arising from oil spills in the ecologically sensitive regions of the Arctic.

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago located between Mainland Norway and the North Pole. It is one of the northernmost inhabited areas in the world. By local law, ships bound for Svalbard can only have marine diesel or similar lighter viscosity fuel on board. They cannot use or have on board Hfo (heavy fuel oil): second Governor Lars Fauseinspectors from the Norwegian Maritime Directorate discovered the fuel on the vessel during an inspection on June 6.

The vessel reported is the Arklow Wind, built in 2019 and registered in Ireland, arrived from Poland to load coal. A fine of around 90,000 euros was imposed on the shipping company, the captain was fined 2,700 euros.
