Federico and Francesco Mattiangeli

The brothers Francesco and Federico Mattiangeli from Terni won the Italian table football title, achieving a historic double at the Italian Fisct championships held last weekend at the federal center in Reggio Emilia. Over 100 athletes from all over Italy were present in the various categories. Francesco Mattiangeli, who plays for the Bologna Tigers, won in the ‘Veteran’ category for which 28 players qualified. After coming second in his qualifying round, behind Stefano De Francesco from Perugia, he eliminated Ruggero Torboli from Viareggio in the round of 16, Edoardo Bellotto from Mestre in the quarter-finals, Marco Lamberti from Reggio Emilia in the semi-final and in the final he overcame current reigning world champion, Gianfranco Calonico of Sanremo, with the score 3 to 2 and the decisive goal scored in the last minute. Federico Mattiangeli, registered for Virtus Rieti, graduated with the tricolor among the ‘Cadets’, a category which saw the participation of 32 players. Third in the preliminary round, he then beat Dino Gasparetto from Modena in the round of 16, Simone Nappini from Castiglione del Lago in the quarter-finals, Daniele Di Cè from Modena in the semi-final and Luca Riccio from Sessa Aurunca in the final by 1 to 0. For the first time two brothers – who are both lawyers in real life – were awarded the Italian title on the same day. For Francesco it is the fourth Italian championship in his career (Open in 1988 and three Veterans in 2007, 2009 and 2024) while for Federico it is the first individual title; together they were also Italian team champions three times. With the victory in Reggio Emilia, Francesco earned participation in the world championships which will take place in England in September.
