(SAY) Palermo, 17 June. – The oil that fuels the votive lamp that burns day and night on the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi will arrive from Sicily this year. The ‘Assisi – Sicily’ event was presented at Palazzo d’Orleans in Palermo by the president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, and by the president of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Antonino Raspanti.

Every year the oil for the votive lamp on the tomb of Italy’s patron saint comes from a different region, on the occasion of the October 4th celebration. The Sicilian churches, therefore, will donate one thousand liters of oil (60 for each diocese) to power the Assisi lamp. The excess quantity will remain available to the diocesan Caritas. On the occasion, the logo that will mark all the events capable of attracting thousands of pilgrims, created by the Sicilian Region, was also revealed.

“After twenty years, Sicily will be the protagonist in the delivery of an oil that means brotherhood, solidarity and attention to the poor – stated Schifani -, following the example of Saint Francis. Values that we interpret in our government action.

We will experience a magical day, in which all Sicilians will be protagonists in this spirit of attention to the poor. Politics must accompany actions with words – concluded the governor – ensuring that those who can’t make it can find support from the institutions”. (Sat/Say) 11:10 17-06-24
