The satisfaction for having “charted the course” in the days in which the world’s greats met in Borgo Egnazia is already clear from the video message from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after the smooth signing of the 36-page conclusions of the G7. «In recent days Italy has been at the center of the world, and the eyes of the world have been focused on us. I am proud of how our nation managed to amaze and chart the course”, said the Prime Minister regarding the outcome of the Apulian summit. The government – thanks to the fact of playing at home – has in fact cashed in on the agreement between the leaders on Ukraine, migrants and artificial intelligence, as well as the historic participation of Pope Francis, who criticized the big seven, underlining that “good politics are needed for the common good.”
Concepts that Meloni will most likely reiterate today after lunch in the press conference which will close the Apulian G7 summit. The leaders said they were ready to “face global challenges” and there was an agreement on aid to Kiev which will receive 50 billion dollars, on support for the American peace plan for Gaza, on the Mattei plan for Africa, so like the references to China and Russia. It is no coincidence that in the face-to-face meeting between Prime Minister Biden, the American president praised the Italian Prime Minister for “her firm support for Ukraine”.
But the work of international diplomacy is not yet finished. While many leaders have already left, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is still busy in the morning with some bilateral meetings, in particular with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, the President of Ageria Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the President of the African Development Bank (Afdb ), Akinwumi Adesina. Other heads of state and government, such as the German Olaf Scholz and the Brazilian Lula, will also have bilateral meetings on the sidelines this morning. But all eyes are on what Giorgia Meloni will say at 2pm, when she meets the press.
