24 Hours Le Mans, Kristensen: “I’ll explain how you win here. It’s not enough to be fast…”

If there is a driver who has associated his name with the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has become a true legend of this race, it is certainly Tom Kristensen. The Dane, now 56, retired in 2014 after an extraordinary career in Endurance which led him to conquer the French classic nine times, including six consecutively between 2000 and 2005, earning him the nickname “Mr. Le Mans”. Today his role is that of commentator of the race for Eurosport, which broadcasts it live exclusively. No one can explain better than him what it takes to win on the Sarthe track and what the key aspects are in view of this year’s race (start at 4pm, here is the program and how to watch it on TV and in streaming).

the recipe for winning

“At Le Mans you need many components to win: you need hunger, motivation and belief, but also a reliable car and trust in your teammates,” explained Tom Kristensen. “Here, the one who makes the fewest mistakes often wins, because every little inaccuracy costs dearly. It’s not enough to be fast, you have to be perfect.” The Danish driver underlined the importance of managing the night hours during the race: “Driving at night, in the rain, is another sport. You need a lot of respect for the track in all conditions, but especially in adverse weather because the track is difficult and doesn’t forgive mistakes.”

wec, the golden age

The period that the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans are experiencing is certainly very positive, a true “golden age” as Kristensen defined it. “We have the opportunity to see exceptional drivers at work, there are many people following the race and many committed manufacturers,” continued the Danish driver. “Ten years ago I ran my last Le Mans and I have never regretted stopping, even if every now and then I miss the feeling of the race,” he added, specifying that the new role of commentator fully satisfies him. Kristensen also commented on the presence of numerous former Formula 1 drivers in the WEC and at Le Mans: “Any driver wants to compete here. Max Verstappen, three-time world champion, also said he wanted to participate in the future because this is the most extraordinary race in the world. Even a legend like Valentino Rossi, who has won everything in motorcycling, wanted to take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans because it is a special challenge.”

very open edition

The 92nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans proved to be close since free practice, with many manufacturers very close in performance and with ambitions of podiums and victories. “It is impossible to make a true prediction. There are so many factors at play,” he said. “For example, the absence of tyrewarmers will make it difficult to heat the tires and a lot of attention and skill will be needed to bring them up to temperature quickly. Furthermore, the weather is very changeable and rain can mess up plans at any time.”
