‘Ndrangheta and politics in Reggio Calabria, Public Notice takes a position: “A politics without relations with the mafia can and must exist”

If the mafia cannot exist without relations with politics, politics can and must exist without relations with the mafia. Public Notice forcefully reiterates this principle in light of what is emerging from the investigation carried out in Calabria by the ROS carabinieri and the Reggio Calabria prosecutor’s office, from which emerges a complex system of exchange votes, managed by well-known representatives of the ‘ndrine in agreement with some political candidates, on the occasion of the 2020 regional and municipal elections.

The interceptions made known give back the image of yet another cross-section in which the vote, the right/duty of every citizen, is considered a bargaining chip to be able to maintain privileges or arrogate further ones by the local mafia organizations and at the same time a means to ensure prestigious positions for those political representatives who ask for mediation from those whose criminal power they know. There is no shortage of direct attacks on journalists who, through free and competent work, help this reality to emerge.

“We thank the police forces and the judiciary for the important work they have done and are doing – declared the Regional coordinator of Public Notice, Giuseppe Politanò – and we express our closeness and our support to the journalists and local administrators who in the land of Calabria keep their backs straight and practice their work in compliance with the principles and values of the Constitution as well as professional ethics”.

“As repeated recently in a Appeal that Notice Public launched together with Libera to the candidates, it is up to the political forces to responsibly choose the people to include in the electoral lists and to the citizens to carefully vote for honest and competent people. Where there is transparency, civic participation and free information, the mafias lose. Always,” concluded Politanò.
