Athletics, the Florentine Fabbri (as favourite) wins gold in the weight class

Leonardo Fabbri, 27 year old Florentine and great fan of the Liglia team (he appeared on the stage with a purple armband) is enjoying a great victory. With 22.45 he dominated the weight at the European Athletics Championships underway in Rome. The race took place on the evening of Saturday 8 June.

The second, the Croatian Mihaljevic who won the silver medal, stopped at 21.20.

A growing competition with two throws over 22 metres

After a not very exciting 20.42 (not at his level at least) Fabbri gets the throw which already seems decisive with 22.12 (practically unattainable by the others) but then easily lands a great 22.45 which earns him first place and the gold medal .

Having grown up in the Florence Marathon and now working for the Air Force, Fabbri had arrived at the European Championships as a great favourite. In an extraordinary month of May, in fact, in addition to the Italian record taken from Alessandro Andrei with 22.95, he recorded the five best performances of the season with an average of victory throws over 22.74.

And now the challenge to the Americans at the Olympics

“During the warm-up and in the first throw I didn’t like it, I suffered from the heat and cramps. Then I did the simple stuff. I had a blast, now I want to beat the Americans”, said Fabbri, already thinking of the Paris Olympics.

“I wanted to do more but today we had to win, I’m still not at the top I struggle to control the throws, I have to keep working”.
