Shopping at the fruit and vegetable market: A day among sour cherries and red fruits

On June 9th, at 9:00 am, a special event took place at the local fruit and vegetable market, entirely dedicated to black cherries and red fruits. This event attracted numerous enthusiasts and curious people, thanks to the participation of the Slow Food community, committed to protecting the Colli di San Pietro black cherry.

Taste Laboratory: Tradition and Innovation

At 10:00, the “Taste Laboratory” came to life, offering those present a demonstration of the different ways of using black cherries. Thanks to the expert guidance of members of the Slow Food community, participants discovered how these delicacies are infused with red wine, together with the leaves, and then diluted with sugar syrup.

Not only a pleasure for the palate, black cherries also demonstrate beneficial properties: the stones are used to create thermal cushions that relieve pain, while the petioles, dried in the sun, become a precious ingredient for diuretic herbal teas. A market producer, specializing in herbal teas, shared his experiments and plans to create a seaweed herbal tea, which is attracting more and more interest.

Tradition and Community: The Return of the Sour Cherries

Black cherries, once almost forgotten, are experiencing a rebirth thanks to the tireless work of the Slow Food community and the Taste Laboratories. The demand for this fruit is growing, so much so that the few black cherries available on the market were quickly sold out, as told by the president of the market with a funny anecdote.

Amarena Award and Young Talents

Another important initiative is the Amarena Prize, promoted by the Archimede youth association. This award not only celebrates the excellence of Carotte’s black cherries, but also involves young people, raising their awareness of biodiversity and the importance of preserving local traditions. Last year, the second edition of the award saw great participation, also thanks to the interest aroused by the presence of actors from the fiction “Mare Fuori”, who attracted many young people.

Conclusion

The event at the fruit and vegetable market demonstrated how the synergy between tradition and innovation can lead to surprising results. Thanks to the support of the Piano di Sorrento administration and the enthusiasm of the young people of the Archimede association, the black cherries of the Colli di San Pietro are once again becoming a symbol of excellence and local identity. The hope is that these initiatives can continue to grow, involving more and more people in the rediscovery and valorization of our gastronomic and cultural roots.
