AGI – Italy will be the last country to close the polls, tomorrow at 11pm, and the official results of the European elections will not be known before 11.15pm as no nation will be able to publish them before then. In the afternoon, the estimates published by the European Parliament based on polls and exit polls will be released, which will contain more information as the electoral colleges close in each member state. The first set of estimates by country will be known around 6.15pm. Two hours later, there will be a first projection of the composition of the European Parliament based on national estimates, pre-election polls or exit polls.
The second official screening of the evening, around 11.15pm, will be the first to contain the official results, but not for all countries; some, like Italy, will finish closing the polls at that time and others will carry out a slower count. The last screening of the evening will be released around 1am on Monday 10 June, but it will probably take days to know the final result. The projections published by the European Parliament, however, are based on the groups that existed in the legislature that is concluding which can remain, disappear, gain seats or lose them.
On election night, the hemicycle’s “cake” will have a significant portion not assigned to any group, corresponding to those national parties that were not present in the current European Parliament or that have not communicated which groups they will join in the next legislature. Negotiations to form groups bringing together MEPs from different countries with similar affinities could begin as early as the morning of the 10th. To form a group, at least 23 MEPs from a quarter of the member states must come together, i.e. a minimum of seven countries.
