GENOA – The bulldozers on the Genoese coast are still at work making the finishing touches to the beach but everything is ready for the start of the bathing season. From 1 June to 15 September, the 1,200 Ligurian factories will return to full operation, weather permitting. «It will be a summer of transition – explains Enrico Schiappapietra, regional president of the Italian Seaside Union – There will be no repercussions for customers but there is still great uncertainty about what will happen after the extension on concessions until the end of the year. Many entrepreneurs who should have carried out interventions to renovate the beaches have postponed the works. Let’s hope that after the European elections a rule will arrive from the Government that will finally clarify the competitions. Some municipalities are starting to move but the same indications are needed for everyone».

In Ligurian establishments the prices for a day at the beach with two sunbeds and an umbrella they fluctuate between 20 and 50 euros, depending on the location and the beach. Among the most expensive beaches on the Riviera and in Italy remains that of Nearby with two sunbeds which in high season can vary from 150 to 500 euros per day. «The average increases do not exceed 5% compared to last year – explains Schiappapietra – Seasonal season ticket holders remain faithful to Liguria, the numbers are in line with last year and the end of schools will mark the official start of holidays and weekly bookings» .

On the Genoese coast where many establishments have already opened since mid-May, all eyes are turned to the sky. To the San Nazaro bathrooms the 500 cabins have already been sold out since March. One thousand seven hundred euros for a standard cabin but it reaches almost three thousand euros for those with a small terrace overlooking the sea. For a day with two sunbeds and an umbrella it goes from 35 to 40 euros for the weekend, 25 euros for half a day. «We have around seventy seats for daily newspapers, the rest are all season ticket holders. Prices are stable compared to last year – he says Franco Pagliasotto who manages the establishment – This year we have a completely new beach, we are completing the nourishment and there is a new profiling».
Work in progress also on the exes Navy Chief, 200 meters of shoreline, which has been a free beach since last year, with a part that will be used as an equipped free beach. Operations which also affected the shoreline where the large boulders that made entry into the water very difficult were removed while nourishment is still underway. «It will be a much more inclusive area, ramps for wheelchairs have been added – explain the managers – And there will be stations with umbrellas for people with disabilities and their families». From 15 July to 15 September the lifeguard service will also be active with two dedicated lifeguards and companions who will follow people who need support in getting in and out of the water.

A project, those of accessible beacheswhich in Genoa involves eight municipal beaches in the project Genoa Sea Inclusion (to the west the Janua bathing establishments of Vesima, the Easy Beach in Pegli, then moving to Corso Italia the free beach of San Giuliano which will take advantage of the enlarged access to the beach and the dedicated bathing establishment, an area of Boccadasse, the beach of Vernazzola and that of Sturla in via del Tritone).
And among the beachgoers there are those who do not hide their doubts about the future. «It’s not just the weather that makes us suffer at the start of the season – he explains Maurizio Puccioowner of the Surf Center, president of the Corso Italia consortium which brings together the Sporting and Squash establishments – Here in Genoa, one of the few municipalities that is calling for tenders for new concessions, we are working to present all the documentation required for renewal by July 15th, a significant commitment. We had planned 40 thousand euros of work to renovate the entire factory with the construction site which should have started last January. Given the situation we postponed.
