FLORENCE – This morning the three workers of the former GKN in Campi Bisenzio passed 72 hours of abstention from foodalongside the other workers and supporters who crowd the “tented demonstration” in Piazza Indipendenza in Florence: “For the moment everything is fine, we are a little slowed down but lucid and calm” he says Dario Salvetti, Factory Collective, one of the three on hunger strike: “I don’t know how long the protest will last, we will continue as long as there is, and as long as they take us” he says, adding: “The supportive embrace of the citizens gives us strength. We feel that this wall is crumbling, we must resist”. The reference is to what was done by the mayor of Campi Bisenzio, who yesterday announced a variant to the Operational Plan which will establish the ban on changing the intended use but also the ban on the creation of activities – for example a logistics hub – which leads that brings more traffic. “
The three seem intent on continuing the protest until “clarity” and “concrete answers” to their requests arrive, starting with salaries and social safety nets which have been missing for 5 months. And then the one, addressed to the Region, to start the process in the Regional Council for a law that establishes a public consortium that plays a role in reindustrialization. A meeting with governor Giani is scheduled for next Monday. “Meetings for meetings are no longer enough” says Salvetti, explaining that what is needed is “a clear pronouncement on the law and its feasibility”. “The consortium has its time – says Salvetti – but to declare it would be to say that the Region is among the parties interested in taking over or entering into the management of the area”.
