The Social Progress Index of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Very good at an Italian levelbut not so much at European levelwhere our region remains far from the top of the ranking which sees the predominance of the northern (and Scandinavian in particular) territories: we are talking about the 2024 edition of the EU Social Progress Index, i.e. the index of social progress, presented by the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira.

The analysis takes into account 236 European regionsevaluated on the basis of 53 indicators economic, social and environmental. Considering the average of the regions, the Italy’s overall score is 88.4 with the Province of Trento first at national level (score of 99.3) and the Fvg second (score 97.5, better than Bolzano). If we broaden our gaze to the entire European panorama, however, the our region is 148th placed on 236 territories considered.

The strengths and weaknesses of our region.

There are three macro-areas considered: these are “primary needs”, “well-being” and “opportunities”: the respective average scores are decreasing, with 101 for the first macro area; 98.7 in the second and 91.5 in the third.

As far as basic needs are concerned, our region performs very well in this regard nutrition and medical care (108.9) as well as in the field of water and sanitation (105.8). The worst data, however, is found on the front safetywith a score of 90.

In the second macro-area, that of well-being, Fvg boasts a score of 111.4 in the field Health (the highest obtained by our region), in basic education it stops at 95.2 while the worst index is that relating to environmental quality with 93.3 (which in any case is higher than Trento, which has 90.4 points).

Finally, the opportunity item: in this case, the indicator ofadvanced education (only 75.6) while trust and governance have a score of 82.8. The data regarding inclusive society is decidedly better (100) and, even more so, freedom and choice (104.1).
