Price increases and fuel, petrol flies above two euros

PERUGIA – Almost 5 euros more for a full tank of petrol compared to last year, with the prospect that costs will also increase in the coming weeks and in view of the holidays. In Umbria the price of “served” green fuel has returned above 2 euros with a growth of almost 6% compared to May 2023, according to the findings of the Fuel Observatory. After the slowdown at the end of 2023, annual diesel prices are also on the rise, with the average regional price close to 1.90 euros. «Consumers now seem resigned to any type of increase», observes Carla Falcinelli, provincial president of Perugia of Codacons.

The Osservaprezzi surveys in March had crystallized the price of petrol at just under two euros (1.98 on average, with Perugia always more expensive than Terni) but in two months this threshold was significantly exceeded. In some Q8 and Eni pumps in Perugia, for example, the “served” price recorded in recent days was higher than 2.10 while in Terni in some cases (Q8) it approaches 2.20 euros. Generally, however, considering the average price, in the regional capital the price of the green one with service at the pump remains higher: 2.070 versus 2.047. Only in some white pumps, the “served” price remains around 1,960 euros and to avoid bloodletting, the alternative is to fill up yourself. Considering a full tank of 40 litres, self-refueling with greenery allows you to save over 8 euros in Perugia, around 7 euros in Terni. The price of petrol without service at the pump also experienced a lower annual increase, equal to approximately 2.6%. Compared to March, the green energy price is the only one rising: +3.7% for served prices, self-service prices are almost stable (+0.3%). «Considering the holidays just around the corner, these price increases, although unfair, do not surprise us – explains Falcinelli – but consumers now seem resigned to any type of increase». There are distributors, see Sardinia or Livigno where the green pump without service is sold for less than 1.75 euros, while in Umbria the lowest price still remains above the euro and 81 cents, referring to white pumps.

A trend which, at least compared to March, does not affect diesel which has falling prices on both modes. For diesel without service, a reduction of 5.7% is calculated, almost 2% for “served” refueling. «Most prices have stabilized – observes Giulio Guglielmi, regional president of Figisc Confcommercio – and even that of methane was below our forecasts. This implies that the level of consumption is also improving, but the situation of many operators remains difficult. Considering the average sales, the margins remain inadequate and as a category we have in fact returned to asking for intervention to rationalize the distribution network”. In comparison with 2023, however, there is also a “red sign” for diesel with an annual increase of 5.9% for “served” and 2.6% for “self”. This is due to the decline in prices recorded between March and May 2023 which the decline recorded in the last two months was unable to compensate for. Also in this case, at a national level, there are places where the price charged (without service at the pump) is around 1,639 euros per liter or even below (1,234 in a white pump in Fidenza), while in Umbria the lowest prices they are around 1,658 euros.

Things are decidedly better for those who have made the transition to lighter fuels which, considering the record increases in 2022/2023, now have more “urban” price lists. The prices of LPG and methane gas, in fact, are falling by 2.5 and 6.7% compared to two months ago, with an average price of around 71 cents per liter in both capital cities (0.669 euros per lowest price). But it is in comparison with last year that prices appear to have plummeted. For LPG gas, quoted at 0.783 euros per liter in May 2023, there was a drop of almost 9%, while the price per kilogram of methane gas for transport fell by 25.6% in one year, going from 1.532 to 1.139 euros .
