Abundant strawberries at affordable prices

This week, strawberries are back in La Borsa della Spesa, the service for Italian consumers created by BMTI and Italmercati Rete di Imprese, in collaboration with Consumerismo No Profit. Abundant and at excellent prices, in fact, the production of strawberries is continuing its tour of Italy, which began, in advance thanks to the good climate, in February in Sicily and which will continue with production in the areas of northern Italy, in particularly Veneto and Trentino. This week they are available in the markets from 3.00 to 5.00 euros/kg.

The good quality and abundance of lemons continues, thanks to the sun which affected the areas of greatest production, in particular Sicily and Campania. Good prices for the Primofiore variety from 1.00 to 1.30 euros/kg.

Furthermore, the nectarine campaign has begun for which more quantities are expected than last year when, due to night frosts, production was compromised. For this week, there is an improving quality of the product and prices on average around 2.30 euros/kg for a medium-small calibre.

The Shopping Exchange, also for this week, recommends the purchase of melons, mainly coming from Sicily and Lazio, for which prices are still affordable, from 1.80 to 2.20 euros/kg and a very good quality , favored by a climate that is not yet too hot.

As for vegetables, the campaign of spring products has begun in full swing, including tomatoes and aubergines which show good quality thanks to the warm temperatures of recent weeks and affordable prices. In fact, in the markets, datterino tomatoes range from 2.50 to 2.80 euros/kg while the cherry variety is around 2.00 euros/kg. For aubergines, however, the average price is 1.30 euros/kg. The not excessively hot temperatures are also favoring the production of cucumbers which have very low prices due to a still weak level of demand, ranging from 0.80 to 0.90 euro/kg.

As regards the fishing sector, the bad weather that affected some areas of our country in the last week has oriented fishing activities mainly towards crustaceans. In fact, pink prawns are abundant in the markets, around 7.00 euros/kg. To protect the marine ecosystem, the consumption of blue crab continues to be highly recommended which, thanks to its abundance, has prices ranging from 2.50 to 3 euros/kg.
