The event organized by the Agricultural Foundation of Perugia in collaboration with the Strada dell’Olio evo Dop Umbria will be held on Saturday 25 May 2024 at the Rocca di Casalina di Deruta (Pg) to discover two excellences of the Umbrian territory: the Tonda Francescana® hazelnut and DOP Umbria extra virgin olive oil.
We will start at 2.00 pm with a visit to the hazelnut groves of the Agricultural Foundation of Perugia, a member body of the Strada dell’Olio evo Dop Umbria and a farm that produces, in addition to oil and wine, also the Tonda Francescana® hazelnut (Info and reservations tel. +39 333 2923801). At 3.00 pm the walk will start from the Rocca di Casalina among olive groves, vineyards and crops, approximately 8 km long, with beautiful panoramic views of Perugia, the countryside of Marsciano and the hills located between Deruta and Collazzone, until arriving at the Sanctuary of Madonna dei Bagni with its 800 ceramic tiles, to then return to the Rocca di Casalina (To participate in the excursion, info and reservations: Louis Montagnoli – 347 1715155 or by email [email protected]).
From 4.30 pm there will be an in-depth discussion on the Tonda Francescana® hazelnut with the participation of Prof. Antonio Bartolini, Vice President of the Foundation for Agricultural Education in Perugia; Prof. Gaetano Martino, Director of DSA3 University of Perugia; Prof. David Nadery, Director of the IIS Cassata Gattapone.
At 5.00 pm the first edition of the competition “The best 2024 ice cream based on Tonda Francescana® hazelnuts” will begin, designed precisely to raise awareness, through the work of Master Ice Cream Makers, of this new variety of hazelnut, selected and patented by the University of Perugia, after a great deal of crossbreeding between the main Italian hazelnut varieties. After reaching the milestone of one million plants produced, in fact, the Tonda Francescana® hazelnut has become the reference cultivar for all those environments in which other well-known varieties of the past show their limitations due to increasingly accentuated climate changes.
At 5.30pm, after the presentation of the competition, it will be time for a snack with bread and extra virgin olive oil and a tasting of Tonda Francescana® hazelnut ice creams prepared by master ice cream makers for the competition. The tasting will be accompanied by the concert of the “Tritone Duo” composed of Maurizio Costantini on double bass and Umberto Ugoberti on accordion. A set of different musical forms, genres and languages, from twentieth-century European culture to jazz, rock, pop, ethnic and dance music, up to film music and klezmer, all contaminated, superimposed, centrifuged and seasoned with a little ‘irony is the hallmark that distinguishes him. At the end of the tastings, there will be an award ceremony for the “Master Ice Cream Makers” in the competition. The concert is part of the “Music among the Olive Trees and Abbeys in Umbria” series.
