Francis Ford Coppola: two day-long dreams

Waiting to see’Megalopolis‘, the latest film work that Francis Ford Coppola defines “the strangest and most ambitious film I’ve ever made”, the Mubi platform offers the exhibition entitled Francis Ford Coppola: two day-long dreams which contains the most daring works of the director, an icon of old Hollywood.

Made in part to save his own production company from ruin, The Boys of 56th Street (1983) is a coming-of-age story starring a cast of rising film stars, including Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon And Tom Cruise. Two years earlier, however, Coppola had tried to bring back the Hollywood musical with one of the most elaborate sets ever. If it was initially received coldly by both the public and critics, the highly ambitious A day long dream (1981) is now considered one of the greatest triumphs of his career.

A DAY LONG DREAM

Francis Ford Coppola: two day-long dreams

In Las Vegas, Franny, a travel agent, dreams of going to one of the tropical locations where she sends her clients. Meanwhile, husband Hank worries about purchasing their spacious Spanish Moderne home.

After Apocalypse Now, Coppola revived the ways of Hollywood’s golden age with this modernist reinterpretation of the musical. Greatly misunderstood on the way out, A day long dream is now a dazzling love story captured with euphoric artifice in an imaginary Las Vegas.

With: Frederic Forrest, Raul Julia, Teri Garr, Nastassja Kinski, Harry Dean Stanton, Allen Garfield.
