ROME – In Great Britain these are the “days of shame”. The contaminated blood scandal broke out, overwhelming the English government. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has become the spokesperson for national sentiment, following the publication of the long-awaited report on what all the media are calling the “worst scandal in the history of the national health system”. Thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C from contaminated blood products used in the NHS between the 1970s and 1990s. Three thousand confirmed deaths, many of them children. And the government intends to “pay”, jointly and severally: it has announced a £10 billion compensation scheme for the victims still alive and their families.

Rishi Sunak took the details of the compensation to John Glen, the Cabinet Office Minister, who explained them to the House of Commons: the victims will receive provisional compensation of £210,000. With the first payments expected to be made this summer: “I know that time is of the essence, which is why I am also pleased to say that they will be delivered within 90 days, starting in the summer, so that they can reach those who need it most urgently need”.

Relatives and friends of victims will also be able to claim compensation: “When a person with a qualifying infection has been accepted into the program, their affected loved ones will be able to claim full compensation. This means that partners, parents, siblings, children, friends and family who acted as carers of those who were infected are all entitled to apply for compensation”.
