Crime on board a cruise ship off the coast of Argentario. A young Filipino woman member of the crew gave birth to a baby on the giant vessel who died within two days. She was arrested on a warrant from the Grosseto prosecutor’s office, she is accused of voluntary homicide.

The woman is in a confused state and it seems that for now she has not given any explanations for what happened, the investigations conducted by the Orbetello carabinieri are still in their initial phase.

The woman is part of the crew and apparently kept her pregnancy hidden. The woman’s own colleagues raised the alarm, probably alarmed by the fact that they heard cries coming from the cabin. Wails that they then never heard again. At that point they realized something was wrong and called the police.

The newborn’s body was in the cabin that the mother shared with other crew members. The police, after having reached the Silver Whisper ship in the open sea with a patrol boat, searched the cabin and other rooms of the ship, also carrying out photographic surveys. The first testimonies have been acquired and the investigations are now continuing on land.

The woman was in a confused state and was taken to the emergency room in Grosseto. This morning the Grosseto prosecutor’s office decided to arrest the woman who is currently in hospital. The child’s body is in the morgue and an autopsy could be arranged.

According to an initial external examination, the death was not caused by suffocation: the doctors who intervened on site found no signs attributable to strangulation.

The child would have been left alone inside the cabin – three meters by two – by the mother without any adequate medical care. This very fact could have caused the death of the newborn.

The police heard all the crew members and everyone would have explained that they had not noticed the woman’s pregnancy. In the next few hours, after the hearing to validate the arrest, it will probably be possible to understand why the woman decided not to say anything about her condition.

After checks on board, the ship resumed navigation.
