THE TOURNAMENT’S ROLL OF HONOR
Sascha Zverev returns King at the Foro Italico. Seven years after the first time, the German wins the Italian Internationals, beating Nicolas in the final Jarry: 6-4, 7-5 the final score in favor of the n. 5 in the world in an hour and 42 minutes of play. A deserved success for the German, that of full maturity which comes two years after the serious injury at Roland Garros 2022. Sascha played a very high level match especially on serve, winning the 95% of points with the first (37 out of 39), and making just 8 gratuitous mistakes. Jarry remained in contact for a long time, but in the end he had to deal with the strength of his opponent who did not allow break points in the match.
The story of the match
The start is on the edge of balance, but with different serving speeds. Zverev loses only one point in the innings (a practically perfect partial with only 2 free errors), Jarry suffers more. The Chilean cancels the first two break points in the eighth game, missing two backhands and putting a drop shot into the net. Sascha doesn’t take advantage of it, but the break is only a matter of time and arrives in the tenth game. Jarry is betrayed by the forehand: he misses twice with this fundamental and concedes once break point that coincides with a set point, converted with another forehand error from the Chilean. In the second set the leitmotif and the match are the same it lights up from the ninth game onwards. For the first time Zverev serves at 30-30 and holds the serve, then on Jarry’s serve, in the tenth game, earn the first two match points, canceled with merit and courage by the Chilean. The decisive moment, however, is one step away from the tiebreak: Zverev wins two more championship points in response, but this time he closes with a winning forehand.

For Zverev it is the twenty-second title of his careerthe sixth Masters 1000. The German also becomes the tenth player in the Open Era to win at least twice at the Foro Italico. An important victory also for the ranking: Zverev, in fact, returns no. 4 in the world, overtaking Daniil Medvedev and rising to second place in the Race for the ATP Finals. An enviable business card ahead of Roland Garros.

The knockout does not cancel Nicolas’ dream tournament Jarryin his first career final in a Masters 1000. “It was an incredible week, thanks to everyone for the support” said the Chilean moved and with a broken voice during the awards ceremony. “Behind this result there is a lot of sacrifice on my part and that of my team – she added – Playing a final in this stadium is a great honour, I hope I can come back and win“.
