Carate Brianza: Corruption at the command of the fire brigade, the Carate firefighter leaves prison

The 57-year-old has left Monza prison, where he had been detained since last December Enrico Verganiresident in Carate Brianza and official of the provincial fire brigade command of Monza.

The firefighter from Carate Brianza is under house arrest

This is what the investigating judge of the Monza court ruled Marco Formentinwhich over the weekend ordered the accused to be placed under house arrest, as part of the trial which sees Vergani himself and four other people accused in various capacities of crimes such as corruption and fraud.

According to what has emerged, Vergani has already paid 10 thousand euros as compensation to Ona – the National Assistance Service for the pardon of the National Fire Brigade, an organization based at the Ministry of the Interior – with the commitment to pay another 50 thousand in the near future. All the defendants involved in the investigation would be inclined to plea bargain. Also Sergio Fortinithe Brescia entrepreneur at the head of a company specializing in the repairs of fire brigade vehicles and now at large, is said to have committed to paying the sum of 65 thousand euros.

Plea deals and probation

In addition to them, the Giussano tire dealer is also accused Martino Longoniborn in 1969, Vergani’s wife Mariangela Braggiato54 years old and his fellow firefighter Edoardo Correnti, resident in Giussano, who asked for probation, an institution which would allow him, in the event of a positive outcome through the carrying out of socially useful activities, to extinguish the crime.
Correnti, an officemate at the time of Vergani from Carate, had ended up in trouble following the developments of the investigation for having “falsely certified his presence in the office”, for a total profit of around 4 thousand euros, including both (in Vergani precisely around 2300, while Correnti for around 1600).

The alleged illicit agreements under investigation revolve around contracts relating to maintenance and supplies for the fire brigade fleet. Vergani had the right to proceed with the direct assignment of contracts with a value lower than the “community threshold” and the purchase of materials.

The crimes contested by the public prosecutor Nicola Balice are those of undue inducement to give or promise benefits, embezzlement, aggravated corruption for an act contrary to official duties, fraud in public supplies, money laundering, fraud, committed from July 2021 to March 2023.

Now the possibility of a plea bargain is looming for the defendants. We will return to court on September 25th.
