The modernization works of the Strada Grande Comunicazione Jonio Tirreno which began on 3 May last include important maintenance interventions and, consequently, also important repercussions in terms of travel on the important artery connecting the two coasts. Not only are the times increased, but also and above all, the inconveniences of the commuter firefighters who serve at the Siderno detachment who, in addition to the journey over 100 km long from the Reggio capital, have to suffer the consequences of slowdowns and interminable queues .
Worrying workers even more is the imminent arrival of the summer season, when the continuation of working hours becomes an unknown and the traffic flow triples due to holidaymakers. The traffic on a single lane inside the “Torbido” tunnel also affects travel, the circulation of which is regulated by a traffic light system.
As the icing on the cake, the total closure of the “Limina” tunnel from 10pm to 6am, with traffic diverted towards the Mammola provincial road and an increase in travel times of over 40 minutes.
As trade union organizations we also insist on the traffic problems of State Road 106, a construction site that is perpetually open and impassable during the summer period due to the increase in the population increased by holidaymakers.
Inconvenience after inconvenience therefore for the commuter Fire Brigade forced to suffer not only the unacceptable lack of road infrastructure in the province of Reggio Calabria, but also a working schedule that is not at all conciliatory with work needs and which consequently implies a significant increase in stress.
As trade unions we have once again written to the administration of the National Corps asking for the restoration of working hours with 24-hour shifts, in order to significantly reduce commuting and the risks associated with it.
