LET’S NOT CALL IT AN ACCIDENT AT WORK

On May 17th two workers, employees of IMES SPA of Sumirago (VA), were the victims of yet another accident at work. One of the two appears to be in serious health conditions and was transported to hospital under code red by air ambulance, probably in danger of his life.

USB continues to forcefully reiterate that this is not a matter of fate. People die and get injured because health and safety costs are cut, because the laws are not enforced and because the penalties imposed on those responsible are generally of little relevance.

We cannot accept the lack of a regulatory framework capable of achieving effective deterrence towards those who, in the name of profit, cause deaths and serious injuries by failing to apply the necessary safety measures. We cannot resign ourselves to the fact that in the last ten years the ASL/ATS inspectors in Italy have decreased by 50% thanks to the unfortunate decision of all the governments that have followed one another in the last twenty years, to cut public services.

USB expresses all its solidarity with the workers involved and their families, and calls for a decisive strengthening of inspection activity and a law that finally introduces the crime of murder and serious injury at work, which gives more power and protection to trade union delegates and RLS who report and denounce irregularities.

USB proclaims a two-hour strike on Wednesday 22 May 2024 from 09:00 to 11:00 with a protest in front of the IMES in Sumirago. We invite all workers to participate in solidarity with their colleagues.

Health and safety first!
