Death at work, worker crushed by copper coil in Fornaci di Barga – www.controradio.it

Death at work – It occurred late yesterday afternoon at Kme Europametalli in Fornaci di Barga (Lucca), a metallurgical company for copper processing. Health workers sent by 118 arrived on site and confirmed the death of the worker.

The victim is a 50-year-old man, Nicola Corti, from Barga. The police are investigating the dynamics of the accident. From what we learned, the man died crushed by two rollers of the rolling mill machinery. A colleague would have found him: he immediately raised the alarm but there was nothing left that could be done for the 50-year-old. The Kme of Fornaci di Barga employs around 600 workers.

At first it seemed that the victim had been stuck in a machine, but subsequent reconstructions revealed it seems that the worker was crushed by one of the large copper coils in the department, causing him a lethal chest trauma. The police and the ASL workplace safety technical staff also arrived at the company to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident.

“Enough is enough, this massacre must stop. We can no longer tolerate the inaction of the national government on the issue of safety at work: serious and structural measures are needed immediately, such as the introduction of a special prosecutor’s office and the crime of murder at work, the hiring of more inspectors to increase controls, a system that prevents those who violate safety regulations from continuing to work. The necessary resources must be found promptly, as has been done on other occasions by the same executive.” Thus Uil Toscana, through its regional secretary Paolo Fantappiè, regarding the death of Nicola Corti, a Kme worker from Barga (Lucca), who died in an accident at work late yesterday afternoon.

“Nicola – Fantappiè states – was one of our members, who we knew well given his important trade union commitment in our organisation. We are astonished by his passing and as Uil Toscana we offer our deepest condolences and a strong hug to his family and loved ones.” Uil also asks the Tuscany Region for “a permanent table on health and safety at work, so as to constantly monitor the situation in the many companies in the territories and identify the necessary countermeasures to be implemented in the region. Our fight will not stop. We want zero deaths at work.”
