Last night, at Iene, what was defined as the unedited and complete footage of the brawl, which ended in a shootout, which involved Baby Gang and Simba LaRue in 2022 was broadcast. The events, we remember, took place in Milan in via of Tocqueville, Corso Como area, on the night between 2 and 3 July of that year, and ended with the shooting of two Senegalese men present on site.
Niccolò De Devitiis’ report retraces all the moments of the fight, from the first attack by the boys from outside the Baby Gang and Simba LaRue group, to the alleged theft of one of the boys’ pouch. This, you can see from the video, falls to the ground, untied from the boy’s body. Simba LaRue, present nearby, picks it up, and then passes it to another companion. In all this, Baby Gang appears far from the action. Yet the trapper had been convicted, before the shooting, for a theft linked to that occasion, with a sentence of 4 years and 10 months.
In the video, however, there are no other acts committed by Baby Gang that could be similar to theft. Furthermore, Baby Gang would have been holding a gun during part of the fight, but would never have fired. Despite this, the trapper served 4 months in prison and was then released under house arrest. On April 29 this year, however, he was arrested again on charges of violating these very house arrests by publishing content on his Instagram profile to promote his new album, The angel of evil – his team promptly declared that it would be his collaborators, and not Baby himself, who would publish, and that everything would be part of the agreements with the judge for the promotion of the artist’s work.
However, this May 7th saw the news that Baby Gang had started a hunger strike from prison to protest against a decision that it considers unfounded.
Yesterday evening, coinciding with the broadcast of the Iene service, a new post appeared on Baby Gang’s social networks, containing photographs of a letter written to De Devitiis:
«Dear Nic, I need you. I’m writing to you from my cell, immersed in the darkness, surrounded by 4 soaked walls, after a few days ago I was brought back inside for something I can’t understand. It’s cold in the cell, very cold, even though it’s May outside. I don’t have hot water and I haven’t slept in days. I can’t breathe even in the hour of fresh air. Prison is a place you never get used to. In here every day is the same but every time is different. These rooms are filled with humidity and desperation. Often you even forget who you are and why you are where you are. But not me. I do not forget. This is why I need you. I need someone to help me shine a light on this story. But first I have to make a confession. I am guilty. Guilty of having shot a video clip for my new single. Guilty of having asked for and obtained all the necessary authorizations and of having filmed it with an electronic bracelet on my ankle.”
«I confess my distrust in justice. I confess that I no longer understand a system that takes away freedom for such banality. I confess to being incredulous and pissed off. You see Nicolò, when I hear that success makes you privileged it makes me laugh.”
«For days I have lived with the doubt that my career could be compromised but also with the certainty that as long as I have a voice I will continue to do what I do. To write what I feel. Believe me Nico, it’s not prison that scares me, I’ve already been inside and I know I can survive. I am not a danger to society, but I am increasingly afraid that this society is a danger to me. Now, however, I have decided to rebel against all this. To scream my reasons to the world. I have started a hunger strike and I will continue until my thirst for justice is quenched.”
