Correggio (Reggio Emilia), 15 May 2024 – He had just dropped off a large group of students, heading to schools to start lessons, when the long bus it caught fire. It happened a few minutes before eight today at the Piazzale Due Agosto terminal in Correggio, close to the historic center of Correggio, near the schools, the sports hall and the San Sebastiano hospital.
They were in the area numerous students and other users of the public transport service, in rush hour traffic. The firefighters were immediately mobilised, arriving from Reggio and Carpi to put out the fire, while a long column of smoke rose, visible for kilometers away. An explosion was also heard, perhaps due to the bursting of tires due to the effect of the strong heat released by the fire.
A first ambulance was also sent to the scene nearby Red Cross headquartersa, with the mobilization of other emergency vehicles, as well as the staff of the Novellara emergency medical service, to deal with possible health emergency situations, linked in particular to cases of smoke poisoning that can occur in these cases.
In fact, the driver managed to immediately evacuate all the passengers, who quickly fled to safety when they smelled smoke and saw the first flames as soon as the bus arrived at the terminal. The tension and concern for the witnesses and the parents of the children who were on site is understandable. The police forces were also mobilised local police and carabinieri to close the area, for safety reasons. Investigations have also been launched to verify any harmful effects on the environment due to the smoke caused by the fire.
