The Potenza Peace Committee invites citizens to participate in the demonstration which will be held next Wednesday 15 May, starting from 5.30 pm, in the Piazza di Parco Tre Fontane in Rione Lucania, to ask for immediate ceasefire in Palestine and the reopening of the crossings to allow the arrival of humanitarian aid.

As we learn from a note:

“May 15th is a symbolic date because on this day hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remember the anniversary of the Nakba (the catastrophe), i.e. the day on which, in 1948, theviolent and mass expulsion of more than 700 thousand Palestinians, with the destruction of their villages and cities, to which they were no longer able to return.

In these days the Israeli army, with yet another illegitimate military operation, has now took control of Gaza also through the Rafah crossing, on the border with Egypt, effectively sealing and isolating the territory of the Strip where am I amassed almost 1 and a half million people who no longer have anywhere safe to go.

The closure of the crossings and the attack on the city of Rafah highlight, once again, that the State of Israel is implementing those genocidal actions against the Palestinian people that the International Court of Justice has recommended to prevent.

Tel Aviv has repeatedly reiterated that the military operation in Rafah would be held at any cost and that the issue “is not negotiable”, despite the concerned appeals of the United Nations and international organizations and despite even the United States, its closest friend and ally of Israel, have threatened to suspend deliveries of certain types of weapons.

UNRWA again stated that the consequences of an Israeli offensive in Rafah would be devastating, as did Norwegian Refugee Council spokeswoman Samah Hadid.

The UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, ordered Israel to immediately reopen all the crossings and the same request was also made by the United States through its national security spokesperson, John Kirby.

What the Palestinians are experiencing today is a second Nakba, even if, in these 76 years of illegal occupation, in reality the Nakba never ended.

It is therefore necessary, in this dramatic situation, for the international community, Europe and individual states to take strong initiatives to put pressure on the Israeli government, so that stop the massacre of the Palestinian people“.
