European Master Team Championships – Italy in triumph: one gold and two silvers to close an amazing event! The Italian expedition dominates the medal table, Federal President Azzi: “On the podium in all 12 races, a test of strength”

CINEY – Italy closes with three more medals a European Masters Team Championship to be framed on the platforms of Ciney. On the Sunday that brought the curtain down on the continental event in Belgium, the triumph of the women’s saber team in the Veterans category and the double silver for the Great Veterans teams of men’s épée and women’s foil. The Italian expedition thus archives the European Championship by winning the medal table for Nations: the Italian delegation – led by the President of AMIS, Leonardo Patti – excels with 4 gold medals, 7 silver and 1 bronze, for a total of 12 podiums in as many competitions, leaving France and Hungary behind.

Today’s title is designed by the women’s saber Veterans. The quintet composed of Daniela Colaiacomo, Veronica De Cicco, Costanza Drigo, Martina Giannecchini and Gabriella Lo Muzio started the knockout draw in the quarter-finals with a clear 45-10 against Hungary. Another major success in the semi-final, for the team followed closely by Giovanni Sirovich, against Great Britain with a score of 45-16. The match for the gold against France was very hard-fought, with the Italians always ahead, even if by a few points, who closed the match at 45-42, making the Mameli anthem resound for the fourth time in four days in Belgium .
Silver medal for the men’s sword Grandi Veterani with Cosimo Ferro, Giuseppe Amedeo Marino, Fabio Perucchetti, Giuliano Pianca and Federico Strano. The Italian team, fourth after the groups, got the better of Poland in the quarter-finals with a score of 45-29. A clear victory also in the semi-final for Italy who beat Germany (number 1 on the scoreboard) 45-28 in the semi-final. In the final there was a defeat against France with the result 45-41 but for Adolfo Fantoni’s team it still remains a prestigious place of honor.

Second step of the podium also for the Grandi Veterani women’s foil team. The team made up of Gianna Cirillo, Maria Franca Col, Gianna Della Corte, Iris Gardini and Liqin Wei, third after the group stage, beat Great Britain in the semi-final 26-21. The team followed thoroughly by the referee Paolo Bottari then went out defeated in the final against Germany, putting the silver medal around their necks.

This marks the end of a European Masters Championship in which Italy was able to bring medals to all its 12 teams lined up on the stage. An extraordinary demonstration of competitiveness underlined by the Federal President Paolo Azzi: “A real test of strength. The Azzurri reached the podium twelve times in as many races, clearly winning the medal table, an exceptional result which testifies to the quality of the work carried out by the Master sector. To our athletes, who have made all of Italian fencing proud even in these European Championships, to their technicians and to the companies in which they work every day, to the weapons representatives and to the entire movement, my most sincere congratulations which I have conveyed personally to the President of AMIS, and Head of Delegation in Belgium, Leonardo Patti. The consistency, determination and team spirit of our Masters are, I will never tire of repeating, an example for all fans of our sport. And these results are the well-deserved reward.”
