Your son involved in accident: elderly man from Piano di Sorrento victim of scam, but the police intervene

An elderly resident of Piano di Sorrento was the victim of an attempted scam orchestrated through a series of fraudulent phone calls. A fake police marshal contacted the 80-year-old man, informing him of the involvement of his son in an alleged road accident, in which a pregnant woman was allegedly involved. The scam, which involved a compensation of 30 thousand euros, was foiled thanks to the quick wit of the victim and the timely intervention of the police.

In the quiet town of Piano di Sorrento, an 80-year-old elderly man was the target of a complex scam involving the alleged involvement of his son in a car accident. The deception was carried out through a series of fraudulent phone calls, in which an individual posed as a police marshal, communicating to the victim the news of an alleged accident in which his son had been involved.

The scam, perfectly orchestrated, had a second act when a supposed lawyer of the alleged victim of the accident, a pregnant woman, requested compensation of 30 thousand euros for the damages suffered. Fortunately, the elderly man did not succumb to panic and decided to verify the veracity of the information received.

The turning point came when, before the requested money was delivered, the victim’s son returned home. Confronted by his father, the son clarified that he was not involved in any incident, and together they realized that they had been targeted by unscrupulous scammers.

Without hesitation, the elderly man and his son immediately contacted the police to report the attempted scam. The investigators decided to act decisively, coordinating with the victim a false delivery of the money to the alleged fraudsters. However, at the time of the appointment, it was the police who showed up, thus unmasking the scammer.

The scammer was identified as Sharon Russo, a 22-year-old originally from Naples. Currently under house arrest awaiting trial, she will have to answer for fraud charges.

This latest episode highlights the persistent threat of telephone scams, especially against older people, and highlights the importance of being prompt in recognizing and reporting these fraud attempts to the relevant authorities. Fortunately, thanks to the victim’s timely reaction and the effective intervention of the police, this time the scam was foiled before it could cause irreparable damage.
