It was a great celebration that yesterday evening, in the square in front of the Nova Gorica town hall, celebrated the twentieth anniversary of Slovenia’s accession to the European Union. All the elite of the Republic’s politics were present: from Prime Minister Robert Golob accompanied by several members of his government, to the former President of the Republic Borut Pahor up to the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, the first to speak from the stage underlining how “united Europe means peace and solidarity”. Golob instead recounted youthful episodes that link him to the cross-border nature of this territory and recalled, in relation to peace processes and overcoming all divisions, the decision taken today by his government to start the procedures for the recognition of the State of Palestine. Also present at yesterday’s event was the former president of the European Commission Romano Prodi, who had participated in the 2004 countdown for Slovenia’s entry into the EU in Piazza Transalpina. Representing the Italian institutions were the mayor of Gorizia Rodolfo Ziberna and the regional heritage councilor Sebastiano Callari.

During the evening, there was also a lot of music and the testimonies of some Slovenian citizens who told how the opportunities given by entry into the European Union have changed their lives for the better. WATCH THE VIDEO
