Unsafe structure collapses in the Taranto area

Fear in Torre Ovo, in Torricella, at dawn: an old uninhabited building was completely destroyed

Collapse in the center of Torre Ovo, in Torricella, in the province of Taranto. At 4.20 on Friday morning a small building collapsed, abandoned for over twenty years and therefore fortunately uninhabited. It is an old place, already cordoned off because it has been declared in danger of collapse for some time. The structure was seized, because it was illegal, and waiting to be demolished and rebuilt, thanks to the regional “Waterfront” funding requested and obtained by the Municipality: “Fortunately it happened when there was no one around – comments the mayor, Schifone – we asked for the loan 5 years ago, but due to the setbacks caused by the Italian bureaucracy, we were always stuck. The Municipality has been trying to find a solution for over 10 years.” The structure is on state land, but falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipality. Which made management difficult. The police and firefighters are on site. A team of firefighters, equipped with special equipment, is also arriving from Bari. All the necessary checks are underway.
