The investigation lasted approximately thirty-four years and was conducted on over 100 thousand people and was led by a team of Harvard researchers with the collaboration of universities in Brazil, China and the Netherlands.

The report published in BMJ identified different levels of health danger, depending on the type of ultra-processed foods and the quantities consumed.

The danger, however, can be counteracted by increasing the general quality of a person’s diet, adding good quantities of vegetables, fruit and lean proteins.

Dangerous foods

Foods that increase the risk of premature death are: sweet and sweetened drinks, ultra-processed ready-to-eat meats, desserts with dairy products, and some sweet breakfast foods.

Specifically, those who ate at least seven servings a day of ultra-processed foods had an approximately 4% higher risk of premature death from any cause, and a 9% higher risk from neurodegenerative diseases. In contrast, no associations were found with early deaths from cancer, respiratory or heart disease.
