THE BURNING
Just three days after the last serious episode, last night another eight families in Latina were forced to evacuate from a building in Viale Kennedy, where flames engulfed a hybrid car parked in the car parks below, also touching the building.
The fire broke out in the middle of the night, around 3.50 am on Thursday, in a residential complex located at the end of a closed road, shortly after the “Palafitness” gym. It is here that a Toyota C-HR Hybrid, owned by a man living on the first floor and parked in one of the car parks located under his apartment, was suddenly engulfed in flames. The first to notice the fire were some neighbors, woken up by the barking dog.
“First we heard him, and then the sounds of the plaster falling on the car” says a woman, the same one who called for help. The heat of the flames, in fact, caused some pieces of the ceiling of the car park where the vehicle was parked to collapse onto the burning car: «We heard those bangs until 6 in the morning, so much so that my husband didn’t just put back to bed. Many have no longer slept here” says the woman.
In fact, shortly after the fire broke out, the residential complex was reached by firefighters, carabinieri and medical personnel from 118, whose flashing lights illuminated the entire area, with a large part of the neighborhood awakened by the noise of the sirens. Even before their arrival, some residents had already started trying to put out the flames, armed with fire extinguishers they had in the cellar. After the intervention of the firefighters, however, it was the latter who put them under control, thanks to the numerous vehicles that arrived from the barracks in Piazzale Carturan. In addition to the Toyota from which the fire broke out, which was completely charred, the flames also hit a Citroen C3 parked nearby, the right side of which was largely melted by the heat of the fire.
“The owners wanted to move it, but the steering lock was inserted and they were afraid that, once inside, they would be locked inside, next to the burning car,” says a resident. Furthermore, the fire also touched the building above the car parks, completely blackening the first balcony above, but also a part of the building’s facade.
THE ESCAPE
Damage to the structure forced the emergency services to evacuate eight families of residents, who remained on the street until the operations were completed, and only returned once the fire was extinguished and the area was made safe. Together with the firefighters, the Carabinieri from the Latina mobile radio operations unit intervened on site and, in addition to collaborating with the firefighters in the rescue operations, began investigations to trace the causes of the fire.
According to initial reconstructions, the flames were due to a short circuit in the car, one of the hybrid ones which, at times, are the protagonists of episodes of this type, thus excluding the possibility of arson. Among other things, already in the morning the car would have given some small problems, although obviously not enough to foresee such an epilogue.
Just three days earlier, however, in the night between Sunday and Monday, another ten families had been forced to evacuate from a building in Via Isonzo where, probably due to a short circuit in the Napoli bar below, a fire had broken out of even greater dimensions than to that of the other evening, which reached even the top floors of the building.
