We receive and publish a note sent by the president of the OP Blue Sea Gambero Rosso of Mazara del Vallo, Maurizio Giacalone, to the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, the Hon. Francesco Lollobrigida, and for information to the general director of the Fisheries Department, to Coldiretti Impresa pesca, to the General Director of Sicily Fisheries, to Federpesca, to Fedagripesca, to Confcooperative Trapani, to the trade union representatives: Confsalpesca/Flai/Cisl/Uila/Fai. The note has as its subject: “Request for urgent intervention to support the fishing sector affected by natural disasters”.
Here’s what it says: “Dear Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, I address you with the urgency and concern that the fishing sector is facing due to persistent weather and sea disturbances that are bringing the economic activities of our vessels to their knees. For over three months, adverse weather conditions have prevented our fishing fleet from operating regularly, causing significant economic damage to shipowners and the families of fishermen dependent on this activity.
The boats leave with the hope of a good catch, but return with few fish and considerable fuel consumption, generating insufficient income to support operational and family expenses. To mitigate the devastating impacts of this situation, I humbly ask for the possibility of urgent intervention through Ministerial Decree n. 65184 9 February 2024, in order to provide financial support to fishermen’s families and shipowners who are experiencing this extremely unproductive period due to adverse weather conditions.
I trust in your timely intervention to guarantee the economic sustainability of the fishing sector and the stability of the communities dependent on this important economic activity”.
