The Australian director will make a biopic on the famous boxer Christy Martin and the protagonist will be Sydney Sweeney.
Sydney Sweeney will play the boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic dedicated to the athlete’s story.
The project will be presented to potential financiers and distributors at the Cannes festival market in the next few days.

The director of the biopic on Martin will be the Australian David Michôd, already author of films such as Animal Kingdom and The King.
Sydney Sweeney’s next project doesn’t yet have an official title and will follow the rise of the sportswoman in the 1990s, who later became the “female version of Rocky”. The young woman’s life was transformed by her meeting in 1989 with her future manager and husband Jim Martin. Christy became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King and the only boxer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Sweeney’s interest in the role
Sydney has previously revealed she did kickboxing from the age of 12 until she was 19, recently hoping to return to the ring. The Euphoria star added: “Christy’s story is not light, it asks a lot physically and emotionally, there is a lot of weight to bear. But I love to test myself“.
The actress also reiterated that Martin has overcome gender stereotypes and has overcome emotional, physical and financial abuse. The film will then highlight his incredible rise to success and show the struggles of fame that went on behind the scenes. Sydney pointed out:
“I feel compelled to tell a story of a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t let it defeat her. This is a powerful and emotional story“.
David Michôd instead underlined that after making films about complicated men, he wanted to make one about a woman who has a “fierce energy inside her” and, when he discovered her story two years ago, he immediately understood that Christy Martin’s it was perfect.
Filming will take place in the autumn in the United States with the support of the production company Black Bear.
