Friuli Venezia Giulia: Region, strategic investments underway in Porto Trieste

The infrastructure activities in the port of Trieste and the investments underway for the development of the logistics platform and for the strengthening of the railway connection network are the main themes that emerged from the meeting held between the regional councilor for Infrastructure and Territory and the president of ‘Port Authority of Trieste, followed by a visit to some of the strategic places included in the Porto Nuovo area.

A useful meeting – is the thought expressed by the representative of the Council – to deepen the knowledge of the activity carried out by the various logistics structures and fundamental to better direct the investments to focus on in terms of infrastructure and transport. Trieste, as the councilor recalled, is a point of reference in the region for the transport of goods arriving by sea towards the backport areas of the territory and, from there, towards the rest of Italy and abroad. The Region, through the appropriate control room in which representatives of the Port Authority are also present, has started a dialogue with the Logistics Platform of Trieste (Plt) to guide future choices on the strategic infrastructures in which to invest.

Among the infrastructural activities under construction, mention was made in particular of the extension of the infrastructure for the development of the Free Point, the construction of the new Servola station (with an investment of 180 million euros) and of Pier VIII (300 million of Euro). It was also highlighted how the Port of Trieste, thanks to the wide diversification of its activity, is able to respond efficiently to the opening of new freight traffic following the blockage of the Suez Canal. Markets that mainly involve the Mediterranean area and which can offer interesting commercial opportunities for the logistics platform of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

At the end of the meeting, the councilor visited the areas of Pier VII, the Plt and the FreeEste Free Point located in Bagnoli della Rosandra. In Pier VII the development project by Trieste Marine Terminal, the concessionaire company of the container terminal located at the Pier, involves the extension of the terminal in order to allow operations of up to 1,200,000 TEUs per year, of the current capacity of 900,000 TEUs. In the Logistics Platform, where the councilor visited the offices of the Hhla Plt Italy group which manages the dock, the design of a cutting-edge terminal is planned at Pier VIII, which will lead to the creation of 700 new jobs and with which the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 18 million tonnes through the use of high standards of innovative and sustainable technologies. Finally, in the Punto Franco area it was possible to verify the restoration of the backbone track, useful for connecting the airport
Trieste Aquilinia and the intermodal terminal called FreeEste.

On this occasion, the councillor, highlighting the now consolidated relationship between the Region and the Port Authority, recalled how the Regional Administration supports the development of the port logistics system with an annual contribution of 6 million euros, aimed in particular at strengthening the transshipment and transfer activities via shortsea connections to other Adriatic ports and the intensification of intermodal rail connections with the markets of North-East Italy.
