Cairo had warned of the potential risks of an Israeli military operation in the Palestinian area of Rafah in southern Gaza.
In a statement released by its Foreign Ministry on Monday, Egypt said this escalation poses grave humanitarian risks for more than a million Palestinians in the area. He called on Israel to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation, and to spare the lives of Palestinian civilians facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
Egypt reiterated that it continues to communicate around the clock with all parties to prevent the situation from worsening or spiraling out of control.
