France, Maradona’s Ballon d’Or from the 1986 World Cup up for auction

The Ballon d’Or awarded to Argentine great Diego Maradona as the best player of the 1986 World Cup will be auctioned by Aguttes in France, the auction house announced. Aguttes did not initially provide an estimated price. Two years ago, the shirt worn by Maradona in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup was auctioned for 8.4 million euros. Argentina won their second world title in the 1986 tournament, which is probably best remembered for Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal against England in the quarter-finals, when he beat goalkeeper Peter Shilton using his hand to put the ball in the net. Maradona’s Ballon d’Or disappeared for 35 years after it was stolen from its safety deposit box in a bank in Naples in 1989. In 2016, a French collector bought it along with other trophies for a few hundred euros, without initially know what it was about. Only later did two experts establish the authenticity of the Ballon d’Or. Maradona died in 2020 at the age of 60.
