Diletta (Cescon), heiress of a bourgeois family very well known in Veneto, she lives together with her husband Giorgio (Giallini), her children and her mother Miranda (Erika Blanc), who lives not far away and who comes assisted by Sonja (Cristina Flutur), a caregiver of Romanian origins.
While Giorgio is away from home for a few days – officially for work reasons, in practice to entertain extramarital escapades – Diletta is surprised during the night by some noises. Scared, he takes a gun and shoots to the intruder, seriously wounding him and leaving him dead.
The stranger is actually Adrian (Ioan Tiberiu Dobrica), the caregiver’s son Miranda, who had entered the house secretly to spend the night with Diletta and Giorgio’s daughter. Overnight, Sonja also arrives at the house, worried for not being able to track down Adrian but, in the meantime, the boy dies without Diletta and Giorgio calling for help. Sonja thus finds herself at a crossroads: to report his employers or accept the (lots of) money that the family offers rather than calling the police?

A merciless portrait of the Italian bourgeoisie
Written and directed by Ivano De Matteo, Cottage with guests it’s an anomalous noir which, as usual of the director of Life is possiblehe wants to tell the defects, hypocrisies and the most “inhuman” aspects of a bourgeois family apparently respectable.
Set over 24 hours, in the first part the film focuses on the daily lives of the many protagonists which animate the story and then, in the second half, turn towards the classic bedroom thriller. With some debt owed Parasites by Bong Joon-ho For the obvious class conflict painting, Cottage with guestsdespite a somewhat predictable, if not far-fetched second part, it has the quality of shaking. But above all about putting the viewer in front of an almost Kafkaesque reality which, paradoxically, could happen to all of us.
Thanks to a good scriptwritten together with his wife Valentina Ferlan, the film is configured as a truly unusual object in the contemporary panorama. Also thanks to some genre film atmosphere that is so lacking in Italian cinema today. The cast is also excellentby Marco Giallini a a rediscovered Michela Cesconone of the actresses perhaps most underestimated by our directors.
