Death of Francesco Pio, pit bulls released from seizure

The Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the release of the two pit bulls that attacked and killed little Francesco Pio inside a property in the Campolongo di Eboli area on 22 April. The dogs were transferred to a shelter in the Caserta area and, as far as we know, will have to undergo a recovery process in Naples at the expense of the owners, who are now being investigated together with the mother and two uncles of the thirteen-month-old child. If the owners of the two pitbulls decide not to financially support this journey, the animals will be placed in foster care after being recovered. The International Organization for Animal Protection (Oipa) congratulates the magistrates who took this decision which respects the lives of the two animals and which gives them the prospect of recovery. The Oipa – we read in a note – “hopes that this direction from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Salerno will set a precedent and that it will be a model to follow in similar cases where challenging dogs are the protagonists of more or less serious episodes of aggression. Having said this, the association returns to ask the legislator to regulate the detention of certain types of dogs which too often are chosen by people who are not able to manage them correctly. At a local level, some Municipalities, such as that of Milan, have regulated the matter by providing for the granting of licenses for the keeping of certain breeds or similar breeds”.
