Southern Italy, what history, what future

Historians and intellectuals with consolidated experience, with a group of young scholars, will participate on Thursday 9 May from 9am to 6pm in the meeting organized at the Banco Napoli Foundation entitled “Mezzogiorno: which history, which future?”. Objectives: to give voice and encourage the growth of a new generation of researchers and offer analyzes and ideas on the present and future of the South. The event is promoted by a group of historians belonging to ten universities and research institutions located throughout the country , from Palermo to Udine passing through Naples, Rome and Perugia. «While the new law on differentiated autonomy is being discussed in Parliament – ​​explain the organizers – a day of study and discussion is taking place in Naples to put the issues linked to the history of Southern Italy back at the center and enrich a cultural debate within which to build the reasons of being together in a truly united country.” Introducing the works: Orazio Abbamonte, president of the Banco di Napoli Foundation, the budget councilor of the Municipality of Naples Pier Paolo Baretta and Lucio D’Alessandro, rector of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University and vice-president of the CNR. Participants: the publisher Alessandro Laterza, the deputy Toni Ricciardi, the director of ISEM – CNR Gaetano Sabatini, the writer Isaia Sales, the economist Gianfranco Viesti. Numerous professors from Neapolitan and Campania universities: Nunzia Berrino, Francesco Dandolo, Gabriella Gribaudi, Luigi Mascilli Migliorini. Coordinators of the Scientific Committee are Giovanni Farese and Filippo Sbrana. The meeting is divided into four sessions, including a round table. We discuss immigration, banks and development, the relationship between the economy and organized crime, constantly bringing history and current affairs into dialogue. The “notebooks” of the Banco di Napoli Foundation are also presented. Furthermore, young scholars from various Italian universities also offered analyzes and ideas.
