Agriculture, native fruit catalog field inaugurated in Friuli

AVONS DI VERZEGNIS (ITALPRESS) – An example of collaboration for the benefit of the territory which sees the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Regional Agency for Rural Development – Ersa, the world of research, working together for the transfer of knowledge by carrying out non only linked to the conservation of native cotton varieties but above all those based on experimentation capable of giving value to the agricultural system. The interactions between different entities including the Isis Fermo Solari of Tolmezzo, the University of Udine, the Pascul forestry nursery of Tarcento, the forestry service and corps of the Fvg Region and some private companies in the area, have allowed the creation of an area of research and experimentation aimed at protecting the mountain territory, at understanding native varieties to give life to projects in favor of sustainable agriculture capable of providing income. It is the synthesis of the concept expressed by the regional councilor for agri-food, forestry and fish resources Stefano Zannier present at today’s inauguration of the native fruit catalog field of the regional forestry nursery of Verzegnis in the Avons area.

In the catalog field there are the main native and conventional varieties of apple, pear, plum and cherry which most represent the mountainous area of Friuli Venezia Giulia and other newly introduced regional species such as the mini-kiwi, the sea buckthorn and the persimmon drying. After the ribbon cutting, the representative of the regional council was able to visit, together with the students of the fourth and fifth classes of Isis Solari, the experimental field which covers an area of approximately 12,000 m2 and is conducted according to the organic farming method in full respect for the surrounding environment. The experimentation aims to select, within the mountain territory, the varieties that best stand out for their resistance to pathologies and abiotic stress, their productive and organoleptic qualities, their aptitude for transformation and their socio-cultural relevance. In this context, according to the representative of the regional council, we understand the true nature of Ersa, that of carrying out applied research with a vision of the future of agriculture. The councilor wanted to highlight the importance of an experiment aimed at obtaining a result that can also be used in areas of the territory where some types of production are less suitable, for example, due to the impossibility of cultivating them on a large scale and therefore of being competitive on the market. The experimentation instead shows the possibility of using types of selected varieties that are more suitable and capable of providing income even in so-called marginal areas. In detail, the indigenous varietal heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia includes 83 varieties of pear, 140 of apple, 15 of cherry and 30 of plum which are actively conserved in catalog fields to preserve them from extinction. Alongside the varietal collection there is an experimental part linked to the cultivation of new species and new rootstocks in mountain areas. The system also fulfills a further role, a training and educational one, through the use of the products by the students of the Solari agricultural technical institute in Tolmezzo with its laboratories. photo: Friuli Venezia Giulia region press office (ITALPRESS). tvi/com 07-May-24 13:39 .
