A new study presented a few weeks ago on the occasion of ESC Preventive Cardiology 2024 by the ESC (European Society of Cardiology) (HERE link) would have revealed that Climbing up and down six to ten floors of stairs a day can increase longevity and reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke and heart disease.

“If you have the choice between taking the stairs or the elevator, choose the stairs because it will help your heart. Even short bursts of physical activity have beneficial impacts on health, and short sessions of stair climbing should be an achievable goal to integrate into daily routines.” he said the study’s author, Dr. Sophie Paddock of the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust, Norwich, UK.

The studies were included regardless of the number of flights of stairs and the speed of the climb. There have been nine studies with 480,479 participants in the final analysis.

The study population included both healthy participants and those with a prior history of heart attack or peripheral arterial disease. Ages ranged from 35 to 84 years and 53% of participants were women.

Research would eventually prove that this physical activity is simple can have significant health benefits.

The data show that those who regularly climb stairs have a lower risk of premature death from all causes than those who use elevators.

Climbing stairs is therefore associated with a 24% reduced risk of dying from any cause and a 39% lower chance of dying from cardiovascular diseaseincluding heart attack, heart failure and stroke.

Experts point out that the activity in question stimulates the circulatory system, improves oxygenation of the body and has a positive impact on health and longevity.
