Oliviero, Zannini and Picierno also attended the public meeting

The defense of the environment and the territory was at the center of the initiative promoted by the mayor of Teano, Giovanni Scoglio, to avoid the risk represented by the construction of a waste treatment plant in the Santa Croce area, which would have negative effects on the ecosystem of the entire area.

The meeting was held yesterday afternoon (4 May) in the conference room of the Diocese of Teano-Calvi and saw the participation of the President of the Regional Council of Campania, Gennaro Oliviero, the president of the VII Regional Commission for the Environment, Energy, Civil Protection, Giovanni Zannini, MEP Pina Picierno, Giovanni Solino, representing the Province of Caserta, the President of the Mountain Community of Monte Maggiore, Salvatore Geremia, the mayors and their delegates of the Municipalities of the district, the representatives of the civic committees and the bishop Giacomo Cirulli.

On this occasion, the President of the Regional Council Oliviero highlighted: “We can only deal with this matter on a legislative level in the Regional Council. The deadline for amending the provision concerning the waste plants in Campania expires on 7 May and on that occasion in the Council we are adopting an amendment that avoids the opening of waste management sites located in areas with dominant territorial development systems with a naturalistic matrix, without prejudice to aerobic treatment plants of the organic fraction serving municipalities and composting plants”.

Oliviero announced that by Tuesday he will present the amendment that could block the opening of hazardous waste sites near locations of naturalistic interest. The provision will also concern the imminent danger of the creation of a plant in Teano: “In essence, by removing the validity of the 24 months of the amendment but inserting an indefinite time, this law can always be valid and cannot be questioned every two years, subject to interpretations”.

Oliviero announced to the population the intervention of the Regional Council which will block the creation of the special waste platform in the territory, authorized with Executive Decree number 57 of 18 March after a ruling by the Council of State on appeal by Gesia, the company that manages the waste in the province of Caserta. But this is a legislative change that affects the entire region. “This does not mean, however, that the Municipality of Teano should not do its part, appealing against the sentence which authorizes the opening of the treatment site – continued Oliviero -. We will do our best as the Regional Council, already once the modification of paragraph 4 was essential to ‘save’ Alife from the creation of a waste plant and the same modification also served in Teano. Now, again, with this modification that we will make by Tuesday it will be established that waste management plants cannot be located in the areas identified in the regional territorial plan of Campania as dominant territorial development systems with a naturalistic matrix, without prejudice to aerobic treatment plants of the organic fraction serving Municipalities, as well as composting plants”.

Bishop Cirulli also spoke on the case: “I am a doctor and I know what it means to get sick. But in this room I don’t see many young people who are interested in the topic of waste and plants”. Cinzia Compagnone of the “No imp” movement also asked for a quick intervention from the institutions. With the regional council scheduled for Monday there will be some news. Meanwhile, the mayor of Vairano Patenora Bartolomeo Catelmo has announced that he will be close to the Municipality of Teano and the mayor Scoglio also economically to deal with the ruling of the Council of State.
