A stretch of medieval walls of Volterra collapsed this morning in the San Felice area, causing injuring a person and the road closure below. The collapse, which occurred around 12.30, affected a section of walls near Porta San Felice, in via della Petraia.
According to what has been reconstructed, a landslide caused the collapse of a portion of the walls, which then collapsed onto the street below. A passer-by was slightly injured and was rescued by 118. The firefighters, civil protection, law enforcement and a dog unit intervened on site to avoid the risk of further collapses. The area has been made safe and provincial road 15 has been closed to traffic in the section affected by the collapse. The firefighters are monitoring the situation and further small failures cannot be ruled out.
The causes of the collapse are still being ascertained, but it is assumed that it was due to a structural problem of the walls. The medieval walls of Volterra are a monument of great historical and artistic value and their collapse represents serious damage to the cultural heritage of the city. The municipal councilor for public works has assured that the procedures for the recovery and safety of the walls will be started as soon as possible.
