THEL bad weather of early May limits the fishing and raises the price of the fish: from anchovies to mullets prices reach up to +20%. This was confirmed by Ansa’s analysis Bmtithe Italian telematic commodity exchangein the wholesale markets.

The prices of anchovies and red mullets are rising
In particular, the prices of the goods are rising anchovies which, due to the scarcity of the quantities caught, today cost from 5 to 7 euros/kg, compared to the 2-3 euros/kg for which they are usually sold in the most fished periods. To aggravate the situation, we add the stopped fishing reserved for the flying boats of the Adriatic Sea these days. Few and expensive up to + 20% compared to 12 months ago the situation for mullets of mud, ranging from 7 to 10 euros/kg, while those of rocks between 15 and 20 euros/kg.
Squid is in short supply
Since a few weeks Squid is also scarce in wholesale markets: limited fishing activities have further accentuated this shortage, pushing imports, in particular from Morocco and the Netherlands; a situation that has led to a price increase of approximately 20% compared to the same period of 2023 and a shift in demand towards squid which, equally, is having an increase of 20% compared to last year, costing from 12 to 15 euros/kg.

The prices of farmed fish, from salmon trout to sea bass
Usually, in case of adverse weather conditions, consumer demand shifts to products bredhowever available and with prices stable compared to 2023. The salmon trout bred in Italy is around 5.80 euros/kg, the sea bass, however, for small pieces up to 600 g, around 13 euros/kg. One thing is certain, the end of the disruptions will bring back a situation of regularity in sales and, consequently, in prices.
