Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the opening night of the 77th Cannes Film Festival (14 – 25 May 2024). The three-time Oscar-winning actress is the second honorary recognition announced for this edition of the festival, after that of George Lucas.

“I am immensely honored to receive the news of this prestigious award – declares Meryl Streep – Winning an award at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of cinema. Standing in the shadow of those previously honored humbles me and excites me in equal measure. I can’t wait to come to France to thank everyone in person this May!”

“We all have something of Meryl Streep in us!”, declare Iris Knobloch, president of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate. “We all have something in us of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer,’ ‘Sophie’s Choice,’ ‘Out of Africa,’ ‘The Bridges of Madison County,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Mamma Mia!’ because she has gone through almost 50 years of cinema and has embodied countless masterpieces. Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, of our shared love for cinema.”
